UvA Grading Scheme

  • For most courses you will be given a mark or final mark between 1 and 10. Marks and partial marks are awarded to a maximum of one decimal place. Final marks are generally rounded off to whole or half numbers. For more details regarding marks, see the Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER) for your degree programme.
  • Certain courses are awarded the result ‘requirements met’ (AVV) or ‘failed to meet the requirements’ (NAV).
  • If you registered for a course but did not take it, or deregistered too late, you get a ‘non-attendance, counted as exam attempt' (NAP) mention which could affect cum laude regulations.

Foreign grading schemes

Your Dutch marks might mean something entirely different in another country. To prevent confusion in this regard, you receive an overview of the Dutch marks giving their most important foreign equivalents with your degree certificate as a matter of course. The marks 1 to 3, 9 and 10 are seldom given.

The grading scheme gives a general impression and is provided for orientation purposes only. If you would like to know more about the differences between the Dutch grading scheme and that of another specific country, please consult the Nuffic websiteExternal link.
