What's the best choice for 2017?

3 February 2017 - By Lotte Luijten, Master's student Persuasive Communication: 'Apparently there’s some kind of new trend in the Internship world when it comes to applying for a position.'

My new year’s resolution for 2017 was deciding what my plan would be after finishing my Master’s. Last year I was convinced that I definitely wanted to do a second Master’s programme, but as time progressed I got interested in doing an internship as well.

So in November I started an account on Magnet.me.  This is almost the same as LinkedIn, but the difference is that you can choose what you are looking for; internships, a job, etc. I had the account for two days and already my inbox contained messages from companies like PepsiCo, Coca Cola and Unilever. This made the idea of doing an internship during my Master’s a lot more realistic.

What I didn’t know was that apparently there’s some kind of new trend in the Internship world when it comes to applying for a position. I expected an interview or two, but almost all the companies that I liked hosted an ‘intern’s day’, or as some call it, an In-house day. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, but it sounded interesting and I really liked the internships, so I wrote my motivation letters and submitted them to two FMCG’s.

The intern’s days were actually a lot more fun than a simple interview. Of course, I was really nervous, but I received so much information about the companies, the people who work there, what a normal working day looks like etc. (And most importantly, after the Intern’s day we all received a goodie bag!) At one intern’s day I also had to do a capacity test, which I luckily practiced beforehand.

So, back to my new year’s resolution: I decided to choose an internship instead of a second Master’s. I became so enthusiastic about all the possible internships that for me it seemed like the best choice. In February I’m pausing my Master’s for half a year and starting an internship at one of the companies I visited at an Intern’s day, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice.

I also think this is the first time in my life that I actually did something with my new year’s resolution.

Lotte Luijten (22) is currently enrolled in the Master’s programme in Communication Science (track Persuasive Communication). Her expected year of graduation is 2017.
