Response to incomplete reporting by Folia on thesis supervisors for Political Science

On 25 April, weekly magazine Folia published a story on contracts that have been concluded with temporary thesis supervisors at the Political Science department. The University of Amsterdam wishes to correct a distorted perception that has arisen as a result of this story.

Are you a student who studies for longer than the set period?

The government has passed a law stipulating that students who study for longer than the official duration of their study programme (including a one year extension) will have to pay higher tuition fees.

Each year, the French embassy in the Netherlands and its partner organisations offer students the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to continue their academic studies in France.

A number of study centres and libraries will be open longer due to the exam period.

Study centres open later due to major ICT maintenance 12 May

Bushuis en UB-Singel study centres will open at 12:00, while the Science Park study centre opens at 11:00.

The enrolment procedure for new and current students starts on Monday, 7 May 2012.

Student email on Google Apps

UvA student email on Google Apps became fully operational on Thursday, 19 April 2012. If you registered no later than 18 April 2012, you will retain your UvA student email address. If you activated your Google account between 6 March and 18 April, the UvA will have transferred the email in your old mailbox to your UvA Google Apps mailbox.

Festive official opening of new CREA building

CREA, the cultural student centre of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HvA), has a new building.

New student ID card

All enrolled and new students will receive a new student ID card in June. To receive a new ID card, students will first need to upload their passport photo via www.mijnuvapas.nl. The new student ID card, which is valid from 1 September 2012, will first need to be validated for use.

UvA second-placed Dutch university in World Reputation Rankings

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the joint second best Dutch university in the World Reputation Rankings 2012 compiled by Times Higher Education (THE). In the global rankings, the UvA is placed in the 71-80 group.

Changes to tuition fee wizard

The ASVA Student Union has informed the UvA that some formulations in the tuition fee wizard (payment module) can lead to confusion among students who are doing a second study.

Reduced prices to Artis zoo for students

The UvA has signed another annual contract with Natura Artis Magistra (Artis Royal Zoo) enabling students to visit the zoo for just €3.

UvA Library’s EndNote license expires: switch to RefWorks

Do you use EndNote bibliographic software to manage your citations? As of July, EndNote will no longer be available at the UvA. However, there is an excellent alternative: RefWorks.

UvA student email Google Apps starts on 6 March

On Tuesday, 6 March 2012 the University of Amsterdam will launch UvA student email through Google Apps for Education. Between 6 – 19 March you will receive an invitation to apply for UvA student email through Google Apps for Education.

Check your personal details in the electoral register

If you want to vote in the Student Council elections or put yourself forward as a candidate, you must be registered in the UvA student electoral register. It is therefore very important to check this from 20 to 27 February 2012.

Louise Gunning appointed president of Executive Board UvA and HvA

Prof. Louise Gunning-Schepers has been appointed president of the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) by the Supervisory Boards of the two institutions. The appointment is effective as of 1 April 2012.

The Executive Board has set out the Enrolment Provisions for the 2012-2013 academic year ('Inschrijvingsbesluit 2012-2013').

Student grants and loans may be abolished for Master’s programmes

Halbe Zijlstra, State Secretary of Education, Culture and Science in the Netherlands, submitted a legislative proposal in the Dutch Lower House concerning cuts to higher education on 19 January 2012. This proposal advocates the abolition of financial assistance for Master's degree students.

AUC Who's in Town lecture series - 'Big impact from small size: applications of nanotechnology in society'

As part of the 'Who's in Town' lecture series organised by Amsterdam University College, Prof. Albert van den Berg, honorary professor and head of BIOS/Lab-on-a-Chip group, MESA+ at the University of Twente and board member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, will hold a lecture about nanotechnology at the AUC Artis Library on Tuesday, 31 January 2012. All students and staff of the UvA are welcome.

Sociologist Gerben Moerman named UvA Lecturer of the Year 2011

Sociologist Gerben Moerman has been named UvA Lecturer of the Year 2011 for his dynamic and innovative teaching. The award was presented by jury chairwoman Tessa van Ligten, a Dentistry student and member of the Central Student Council.

UvA celebrates 380th Dies Natalis

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) celebrated its 380th Dies Natalis (anniversary) on Friday, 6 January 2012. In the opening address, Rector Magnificus Prof. Dymph van den Boom spoke about promoting the distinctive features of Dutch universities. The philosopher Daniel Dennett then gave the Dies Natalis speech titled ‘Curiosity’.

Office 2010 on student workstations

As of Friday 23 December 2011, Office 2010 is now available on all UvA student workstations in the University Library (UB) Singel and the Bushuis study centre.

CREA moves to Roeterseiland

In January 2012, UvA cultural centre CREA will move into a custom-built new building at the Roeterseiland complex. As a result, all CREA activities will take place under one roof for the first time ever.

Playful campaign aimed at improving SIS by student party ‘mei’

As part of a playful campaign aimed at improving SIS and the usability of this application, the student party mei launched the website sisuva.nl, which has their own version of SIS, on 1 December 2011.

Introduction of new Google Apps for Education email service postponed

In June 2011, the University of Amsterdam announced that from September on, Google Apps for Education would be used for students’ email. The introduction of this new service has been postponed.
