Wireless internet

As a UvA student, you have access to the UvA’s wireless network at various UvA sites and in lecture and study rooms.

How do I connect to UvA wireless?

First you need to install software to correctly set up your laptop, tablet or smartphone. Follow one of these two sets of instructions:

Do you already have an internet connection? (e.g. mobile internet)

  • Step 1: Go to  https://wifiportal.uva.nl. This page automatically checks your operating system in order to download the right software (e.g. Windows, Mac OS X or Android).
  • Step 2: Check that the operating system is correct and click 'Join Now'. The software will start to download.
    * Users with Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems should enter their UvA-netID@uva.nl) before clicking the JoinNow button.
    * Users with Mac OS X Tiger operating system can get instructions on the Wi-Fi portal on how to manually set up the wireless network connection.
  • Step 3: Install the software on your device.

Or are you at a UvA location?

  • Step 1: Connect to the 'UvA Open Wi-Fi' wireless network. At the Science Park you can connect to ‘Amsterdam Science Park'.
  • Step 2: Once you have established a network connection, open your internet browser and go to https://wifiportal.uva.nl (Internet Explorer will automatically open the page). This page automatically checks your operating system to download the right software (e.g. for Windows, Mac OS X or Android).
    * Users with Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems should enter their uvanetid@uva.nl before clicking the JoinNow button.
    * Users with Mac OS X Tiger operating system can get instructions on the Wi-Fi portal on how to manually set up the wireless network connection.
  • Step 3: Check that the operating system is correct and click JoinNow. The software will start to download.
  • Step 4: Install the software on your device.

Please note: if you own an Android mobile phone (version 5.0 or later) it is possible that the Android System WebView application is blocking software downloads. If so, try a different Wi-Fi connection or make use of your own mobile network.

After you have installed the software

After installing the software you can start using wireless internet at the UvA by selecting the ‘uva’ or ‘eduroam’ wireless networks and logging in with your UvA-net ID (If you are using a Mac, your UvA-net ID has to be followed by @uva.nl).
