The UvA provides some student rooms for international students who will study in The Netherlands for the first time.
UvA student housing is available for international students who will study in The Netherlands for the first time. Unfortunately, because of high demand, not everyone who applies for student housing gets a room. Some first-year students and most second-year students will have to look for accommodation on the private rental market themselves.
The accommodation is located throughout the city. Amsterdam is separated into different neighbourhoods, all with their own characteristics. Some student rooms are right in the city center, others are at some distance from the center (with a maximum of 45 minutes by public transport). All student rooms can easily be reached by bike and public transport.
We offer shared rooms, private rooms with shared facilities, and private rooms with private facilities. The room prices vary from €380 to €800 per month. All rooms are furnished and the rent includes all utilities like electricity, water, heating, caretaker costs. The rent does not include local taxes.
Students renting accommodation via the UvA will be charged a fee. This fee is required to cover the UvA's costs in providing the housing service to international students. The accommodation fee for one semester is €340, for two semesters it's €555 (fees 2017). We will also give a special early bird fee so check your email about this from May 2018 forward. The fee is non-refundable.
Please note that the rental periods are always fixed periods. In addition, we strongly advise students not to choose a one-semester period if your studies will take two semesters, a full year or more. If you choose only one semester, we cannot guarantee you an extension and if an extension is granted, you will have to pay the UvA housing fee twice. If you decide to stay in Amsterdam for longer than one year, we strongly advise you to register on Studentenwoningweb.nl and ROOM.nl as early as possible.
Most international student rooms are in buildings or on floors with only international students. Some rooms, however, are in buildings or on floors where the majority of tenants are Dutch. The rooms do not resemble dorms and no doormen or receptionists are present in the buildings. Check out some student room examples here:
If you have ticked the box for accommodation in your programme application and have secured your place in the programme by sending us your participation agreement, we will send you the link to pay the fee around the end of May/beginning of June. We strongly advise you to apply as early as possible. Applications can be submitted after paying the accommodation fee by credit card.
During the online application, you will be informed about the payment procedure. Payment can be done by credit card only. It is not possible to pay with a debit card. If you do not have a credit card it is necessary to acquire one or to use the credit card of a relative or friend in order to complete the payment.
The application procedure can take some time. You can expect an email about your room reservation from De Key, DUWO or Ymere during Summer. After approval from the university, you will be able to search for available rooms. We advise you to check your email on a daily basis in this period and make sure that the email does not end up in your spam folder.
Please note that If you do not respond in time your reservation will be cancelled. Make sure you check your email every day, in order not to miss the information. Also check your spam box as emails can automatically be put there if you use a spam filter. We kindly ask for your patience during the room reservation procedure and not to email your housing questions until you have received the room offer from the housing corporation.
You can only reserve one room. It is not possible to change rooms once you have reserved one. If you cancel your room reservation, you won’t be able to reserve another one. Changing rooms after arrival is not allowed.
When accepting the room offer you will be required to pay the following costs depending on the housing corporation (fees 2016). You will need to transfer this first payment before arriving in Amsterdam (fees 2017).
The University and the housing corporations arrange two arrival days with full service Start Appointment and an official welcome. On these days, there is also a pick-up service from the airport. If you arrive during the weekend you will need to stay one or two nights at a different location, for instance in a youth hostel.
The housing corporation will need a credit card number in order to accept and guarantee your reservation. The credit card may not expire before October 2018, so make sure your card is valid until at least that date. The following credit cards are accepted:
If you plan to pay by credit card upon your arrival, we advise you to inform your credit card company that quite a large amount (the first month's rent and a deposit) will be charged to your card in Amsterdam.
All other information concerning the contract, payment and contact information will be sent to you by the housing corporation by email in Summer.
If you are not offered a room in student housing you’ll need to find accommodation on your own. Options including renting a room in a private home, flat-sharing with other students or staying in a student hotel. Some tips:
