Course registration

Faculty of Science

Each semester, you are required to register for courses during the official registration period. When you register for a course, you are automatically registered for the exams, resit and the Blackboard page for that course.

Important details for all

You need to enrol for all master's courses in which you would like to participate

Also if these are obligatory courses. In order to enrol in courses you must meet the entry requirements that are included in the course description in the  UvA Course Catalogue.

Course enrolment is done per semester, for 30 EC. Enrolment is done in a fixed period of 2 weeks in June (for semester 1) or December (for semester 2). Each faculty has its own registration period and deadline. For exact dates see:

No course registration = no participation in exams and resits

If you take a midterm examination, final examination, resit or any kind of other examination without being enrolled for the course concerned, no mark will be recorded. If you register for a course, you are automatically registered for the exam and resit. Students are not automatically registered for the resit if they have passed the course at the first attempt. Students who nevertheless would like to participate in the resit must register at the Service Desk of the Educational Service Centre (Science Park, 1st Floor) at the latest 5 working days prior to the resit. The course coordinator should also be informed (by the student). Please note: the last mark counts!

Deregistration

You can cancel course registrations at uva.nl/courseregistration. Go to the ‘Overview of registrations’ tab, check the box next to the course you wish to cancel and click on 'Deregister' and then on ‘OK’.  You can only cancel courses up until the end of the first week [or an alternative restriction] after the start of the course.

Please note: it is important to deregister for courses you do not plan to follow. If you do not attend a course for which you registered, the result recorded for this course will be ‘NA’ (the Dutch abbreviation for ‘non-attendance, counted as exam attempt’). Moreover, you will be preventing a fellow student from occupying your place in the course.

Too late for registration?

After the enrolment period closes, it is still possible to enrol for courses only if failure to register was caused by exceptional circumstances (such as illness, family circumstances or because of a change in your study programme which is discussed with your study adviser or track coordinator). Permission for late admission is always on condition that the capacity allows it and you have not already missed certain requirements concerning the assessment and participation of the course. Follow the link below to fill in the form in order to request registration for one or more courses.

I am a NEW master student, starting in September

You may want to consult the Course Catalogue to see what courses are in the programme for your master. Several masters have only compulsory courses in the first semester, but in some masters you already have to choose courses (constrained choice and/or electives) in the first semester. For these masters, more information on constrained choice courses and (recommended) elective courses is given in August or September.

Register for courses

With your UvA-net ID you need to register for courses via Datanose. Follow the link below to register.

Once you have registered here, you will automatically be enrolled for the compulsory courses in the first semester. If there is room for constrained choice or elective courses in your programme (in this semester), you can tick these off in the list given, or find them via ‘Find other course’ at the bottom of the page. Please make sure you click confirm before leaving this page.

Collaboration with the VU University

A number of our master programmes are offered in close collaboration with the VU University Amsterdam. Please see the page below for programmes with a close collaboration.

If your master programme also includes VU courses, you will have to register for these courses at the VU yourself*.

VU-net ID

As soon as your registration at the UvA is completed and the tuition fee is paid you will receive a VU-net ID from the VU. The VU-net ID allows you to log in to the VU-net student portal where you can register for courses and examinations.

Register in time

If you do not register on time you have to wait until the next regular teaching or examination opportunity, in most cases a year later. So it is very important that you register for courses and examinations in time. Please note that you have to register for exams and resits separately.

*For semester 2 this is always true, for semester 1 it is possible that we organise enrolment for obligatory courses for you; you will be informed about this by email.

I am a NEW master student, starting in February

Students starting their Master’s programme on February 1st do not need to enrol for courses in the second semester via SIS. Their enrolment will be handled by the Educational Service Centre (ESC). Students will receive information by email about registration for courses.

I am a master student, I have already started

Register in SIS

You will have to register for courses in SIS, before the start of each semester. Please note the enrolment periods and deadlines.

How to enrol in SIS is explained in the Step-by-step guide:

You may want to consult the Course Catalogue to see what courses are in the programme for your master.

Enrolment for VU courses

If your master programme also includes VU courses, you will have to register for these courses at the VU yourself. If your master programme is offered in close collaboration with a VU programme (joint degree, joint programme or otherwise), special arrangements are made for registration as guest student at VU University. For detailed information on VU course registration, please follow the link below.

I am a guest student

Students already enrolled at another UvA faculty

If you are already registered as a student at the UvA, but you are not enrolled for one of the FNWI programmes, you can take courses as a guest student. The only conditions for enrolment are capacity of the course and that you meet the entry requirements for the particular course. You do not need to enrol separately at the FNWI or via Studielink as a guest student. Enrolment for courses works in the same way as it does for FNWI students.

Students from VU University Amsterdam

If you are a VU student in a master programme working closely with a UvA programme, you will automatically get an UvAnetID, with which you will are able to register for courses as regular UvA student. To check whether this is true for your master programme, please check the list on this page:

If your master programme is not on this list, you need to register as a guest student as described below.

Students from another university

If you are not enrolled at the UvA, and you would like to take courses at the FNWI, you need to enrol at the UvA as a guest student. You will find the procedure for enrolling at the UvA via the link below. Enrolment for courses works in the same way as it does for FNWI students.
